Jana Wyatt named Chief Operating Officer
The Mizell Memorial Hospital board of directors recently named Jana Wyatt as Chief Operating Officer (COO).

"Since she started at Mizell in 2005 as chief financial officer, her leadership abilities, strong work ethic and strategic planning skills positioned her as the obvious choice for chief operating officer of our hospital," said CEO W. Allen Foster.

Wyatt serves a dual role in her new position as COO and as chief financial officer.

In addition to overseeing all financial aspects of the hospital, she assumes the responsibilities of the day to day operations and oversight of all departments as COO.

"Mizell is well served by her dedication and commitment to ensuring continued success in meeting the health care needs of our community."

Wyatt, a certified public accountant, is a graduate of Auburn University at Montgomery with a bachelor's degree in business and accounting, and is pursuing a master's degree in business administration at Troy University.

In addition, Amy Bess was named as assistant chief financial officer at Mizell, assuming the duties associated with all aspects of financial management.

New Wellness Center under construction
A new, major development is coming to Opp through the construction of a world-class wellness center.

“The Mizell Memorial Hospital board of directors voted to build a new facility for our wellness program, which will include several features never before offered in this county,” said Dr. Wheeler A. Gunnels, medical director.

“Staying healthy longer through exercise is the major emphasis of any wellness program, but we plan to add much more than that,” he said.

“We are targeting physical rehabilitation efforts on several fronts. Education is also a large part of what we envision for the new center, including a focus on nutritional training for newly-diagnosed disease processes such as diabetes, cardiac rehabilitation and obesity.”

In addition to current exercise options with a variety of equipment, the new center will also feature an indoor heated lap pool, he said.

“This meets the need of many in our county and surrounding area who suffer from arthritis and other weight-bearing limitations. We plan to offer aquatic aerobics and individual exercise programs to those who need it.”

Another new feature for Covington County will be a raquetball court, he added.

“We plan to incorporate a space dedicated to racquetball, which is more in line with what is offered in major metropolitan areas,” said Gunnels.

The building is under construction across from Channel-Lee stadium and the new senior center in Opp, facing Brantley Street next to the medical office building of Dr. Steve Davis.

“This is an exciting endeavor for the hospital and a wonderful opportunity for area residents to improve their health.”

Currently, the Mizell Wellness Center offers:
Trained staff (including rehab technicians, physical therapists and an athletic trainer)
A variety of exercise equipment
Fitness testing
Supervised workouts
